Stand Up and Work Challenge: Day 9

It’s Day 9 of your 28-day transition to a standing desk.

This week you’re working up to standing for two hours a day. Yesterday you broke the 90-minute mark. Nice job!

Today’s assignment

Stand for 108 minutes.

How’d it go?

Leave a comment below when you finish your allotted standing time for the day.

Anything goes here. (Well, within reason.)

This challenge will help you make the transition to a standing desk, but only if you participate every day. If you’re ready to make the switch, drop your email address in the box below.

  • I didn’t notice much discomfort in my back or feet today, so yay! I did feel it a little in my knees, which is new. I’ll be curious to see if that’s a trend.

  • really not too bad. I think I’ve made the switch over now. I’m still standing after the timer is off and as long as I stretch and walk around I can keep going. Thanks for being the motivator!

  • Good day standing! As long as I scatter enough stretching sessions throughout the day I’m good to go.

  • This is my first post but I did switch to standing the first day of this challenge for 2 hours. The next day I just stood all day. My standing setup would be too much to go back and forth. I noticed for the first couple of days my feet hurt quite a bit but not enough to make me want to sit, and then I purchased a cheap kitchen anti-fatigue mat which helped immensely! I have since had my set up looked at by our occupational health person and told them I needed a better anti-fatigue mat (should be in this week). I needed one a little bigger and thicker. Overall this has been fantastic. I find more engery and no aching bones. No real weight loss yet…haha but I had worn a pedometer while I was still sitting and had under 500 steps for the day. I wore it twice while standing and one reading was 4600 and one was 5700. Obviously this is not walking but just shows the difference in how much we are moving. I do sit for lunch and I have an hour everyday I work a desk for incoming calls and sit for that, otherwise I am up and couldn’t be happier!

    • Way to go, Julie. Glad that you were able to just jump right in there.

What standing desk mat did you end up getting? If you like it, I’d be interested in hearing how it works out for you, and I’d even be interested in publishing a short review. Let me know if that sounds like fun.

On the weight loss, for me, standing burns an extra 30 calories per hour (estimated). That’s 240 calories per day, which is like running for 35-45 minutes. That’s a pretty decent calorie burn, and it’ll definitely help if you’re watching your food intake. I’m in the middle of trimming down myself, and my weight loss has accelerated since I started standing for work. It’s not a silver bullet, but it’s a good tool to add to a weight loss regimen.

  • My lower legs and ankles were starting to complain about the standing and my lower back a little bit. This is getting in the range that is starting to be difficult. Still want to stand more, but maybe not so long at a stretch.

  • I’ve missed a few days, due to being in all-day (SITTING) meetings, so I am back to the ramp up. Maybe by June I’ll be finished LOL

After nearly an hour I realized I was standing in my heels, not my “standing shoes”, so that maybe was not so smart. But I’m able to do it. Actually, it doesn’t seem like it’s all that long, so I guess the ramp up is working. Thanks for running this challenge!!

  • Another successful day. I missed the end of the countdown again due to just being too busy to really pay attention to it. I will need to find a solution to the additional time standing on the concrete as this time increases, since I’m feeling it more than I’d really like. I’m fine for the challenge time, it’s just the extra standing that seems to push my feet beyond the comfort zone. I’m sure that new inserts and a better standing pad will cure it. It still beats sitting all day.

  • Bit tiring today, back of legs and a little in the back. Needed to walk around to loosen up

  • I felt my hamstrings start to tighten up and my knees start to hurt around the 80 minute mark. Still feeling good about having stood for almost 2 hours. Woot!!
